Post Halloween Special : Revisiting Durian Hotel

Durian Hotel in its time was one of the tallest structures in Davao City at 12 storeys high. It was prominent, elegant and a prime location at the heart of the city. Low occupancy because of decreasing tourist arrivals as well as high operational expenses eventually led to its closure by Metrobank.

Micecon Delegates tour Abreeza Mall

Delegates from MICECON 2013 were given a leisurely excursion in the premises of Abreeza Mall as part of their Davao city tour last March 8.       Treated to a welcome program with snacks and drinks courtesy of Blugre in Abreeza, the guests from different regions and nations were serenaded with performing musicians and handed Davao-grown tokens from bracelets, notebooks from Tinalak and pomelos courtesy of Nenita Farms. These international delegates enjoyed the cozy ambience that the mall infuses.   The Philippine M.I.C.E. Conference (MICECON) integrates two major Philippine M.I.C.E. Programmes: the long-running (since 1991) Philippine Incentive Marketing Conference (Phil-Incentive) organized by the Department of Tourism / Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) and the Meetings, Incentive Travel, Events/ Exhibitions Philippines Inc. (MITE Philippines); and the Philippine Asian M.I.C.E. Forum introduced in 2008 by the Philippine Association of Convention / Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers (PACEOS). It tackles …

Metrobank Party Rocks!

Metrobank Party Rocks! By Jojie Alcantara (Pubished in SunStar Davao, January 9, 2013) It was a strange invitation for me, to attend a Rock Star Theme Christmas party for the Metrobank Group, and get this—as one of the judges of the American Idol. I was to choose between acting like Jennifer Lopez or Paula Abdul. I honestly admitted it’s more fun imitating Paula Abdul with her crazy antics. The ballroom in Royal Mandaya Hotel was decorated in the ambience of a celebrity hangout: all that glamour and glitz, but dark and subdued as everyone was asked to come in black, the typical rock star attire color. Milagros Gumban, Area Head of Metrobank Mindanao Area, congratulated everyone for a good performance this year, as well as braced herself for the out of character performances that they were about to do that evening.  It was an inspirational opening message coming from her, who was donned in a punk rock hairdo and outlandish rocker outfit, which won her our unanimous votes as the Star of the Night. Of …

My Mindanao: Photographs for Hope

MY MINDANAO: PHOTOGRAPHS FOR HOPE opens tomorrow, December 18, at the Sulawesi Function Room, ground floor of Marco Polo Davao, from 9am until 10 in the evening. This special one day exhibit is for a cause. In our years of experience as photojournalists we have been lucky to be traveling around to document wonderful places, people and culture, and publish them. We have collected many images that depict the beauty of our islands. We truly believe that Mindanao is blessed with people who care for its natural resources and preservation. But Nature has its own course, as well. Last year after Typhoon Sendong, through the help of friends and a workshop (“Shoot for Hope”), we were able to raise money and deliver relief goods to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan during the Christmas Season. This year we are trying to help raise awareness of the need to reach out more to remote, stricken areas hit by Pablo. We decided to donate forty (40) of our images. Some will be of Lumad portraits as well as …

Shoot for Hope Photo Workshop for a Cause

Shoot for Hope Photo Workshop for a Cause Shoot for Hope was organized in a matter of days,  just less than 2 weeks.  When Typhoon Sendong ravaged areas in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, Rhonson and I immediately gathered our very good friends to come up with a fundraising event. In June 0f 2011, Rhonson and I were victims of a flashflood which prompted us to move out and relocate.  Help came from our good friends, and one with the most impact was the workshop that our kumpare Manny Librodo organized along with his good friends Bobby Wong and Aly Reyes.  Together with buddies and other top photographers who waived their professional fees in support of our situation, the workshop was able to raise funds which they sent to us (or rather, Rhonson flew to Manila to humbly accept it).  People we didn’t know greeted us on Facebook and told us they joined the workshop to help us.  It has warmed our hearts so much and helped us in our efforts to try to get …
