PHWOW: When you hear the word Davao, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? ME: Happiness! I am very happy to be living here. I can’t imagine being based anywhere else. PHWOW: No. 1 reason why Davao is WOW? ME: It is the biggest city with a very big heart. People care about you here. It’s more provincial than metropolis in so many ways. We don’t ignore those who ask for directions. We extend more assistance than needed. Cab drivers give back change. We have time for small chats in between work, or while serving guests. People are not that impatient or in a hurry. I can’t say we’re still pretty laid back now that so much development is going on, but Dabawenyos are still amazed at opening up to new experiences. Imagine just having gotten Starbucks last year, and Imax and Krispy Kreme this year. PHWOW: Do you have any tips for travelers who visit Davao for the first time? ME: Don’t hesitate to ask around. Waking up at 4am to catch the sunrise in a remote coastal barrio within my city is rewarding and most often, my feel good therapy. What used to be a most dreaded area back in the 70s and 80s have now transformed into a photographer’s lair with its beautiful coastal vista in the morning.

Last June, Rhonson Ng and I were flash flood victims but we managed to escape after losing our home and things. Good friends came to support us materially, spiritually and emotionally. Renowned photographer Manny Librodo, together with good friends Bobby Wong Jr. and Aly Reyes pooled their support group and tapped great photographers who unselfishly offered their time and expertise in a one day workshop in Manila which helped us tremendously in getting us back on our feet back again. Inspired by this concept, Rhon and I decided it was time to pay it forward. This time around, we asked our photographer buddies in Davao to do this event for us, and they all agreed. Please help us help the typhoon victims as soon as possible. Spread the word. Thank you and Merry Christmas. Tweet

There are two ways to view the sunrise from the highest point. If you climb Mount Apo, or if you ride on an airplane. If you haven’t yet seen or experience a sunrise from above the clouds, take the first flight back to Davao before the break of dawn, which I love to do. It’s a breathtaking experience.
